I — like an elephant in battle,
enduring an arrow shot from a bow —
will endure a false accusation,
for the mass of people
have        no principles.

The tamed is the one
they take into assemblies.

The tamed who endures
a false accusation
is, among human beings,
	the best.

Na hi etehi yaanehi 
gaccheyya agata.m disa.m
Yathaattanaa sudantena 
danto dantena gacchati.

Tốt thay giống la thuần
Quí thay loài ngựa Sindh
Khôi vĩ thay khổng tượng
Bậc tự chế tối thượng


Chẳng phải phương tiện ấy
Ðưa đến cảnh siêu nhiên
Chỉ có tự điều phục
Bậc khéo tu đạt đến

Excellent are tamed mules,
	tamed thoroughbreds,
	tamed horses from Sindh.
Excellent, tamed tuskers,
	great elephants.
But even more excellent
are those   self-tamed.


For not by these mounts could you go
to the land unreached,
as the tamed one goes
by taming, well-taming, himself.

Dhanapaalako naama ku~njaro

sumarati naagavanassa ku~njaro. 

Xưa đại tượng Tài Hộ 
Phát dục, không uống ăn

The tusker, Dhanapalaka,
deep in rut, is hard to control.
Bound, he won't eat a morsel:
the tusker misses
the elephant wood.

Mahaavaraaho-va nivaapapu.t.tho 
punappuna.m gabbhamupeti mando.

Người ham ăn mê ngủ
Nằm lăn lóc qua lại
Giống như heo mới ăn
Kẻ ngu mãi đầu thai

When torpid & over-fed,
a sleepy-head lolling about
like a stout hog, fattened on fodder:
a dullard enters the womb
	over &
	over again.

Ida.m pure cittamacaari caarika.m
Yenicchaka.m yatthakaama.m yathaasukha.m
Tadajjaha.m niggahessaami yoniso
Hatthippabhinna.m viya a'nkusaggaho

Tâm nầy trước phóng dật
Ham, thích theo dục lạc
Nay sáng suốt tự rèn
Như dạy voi bằng móc 

Before, this mind went wandering
	however it pleased,
	wherever it wanted,
	by whatever way that it liked.
Today I will hold it aptly in check —
as one wielding a goad, an elephant in rut.

Appamaadarataa hotha 
sacittamanurakkhatha
Duggaa uddharathattaana.m 
pa'nke sanno-va ku~njaro.

Vui thích trong tinh cần
Khéo phòng hộ nội tâm
Kéo mình khỏi đường ác
Vũng lầy voi thoát thân

Delight in heedfulness.
Watch over your own mind.
Lift yourself up
from the hard-going way,
like a tusker sunk in the mud.

Sace labhetha nipaka.m sahaaya.m
Saddhi.m cara.m saadhuvihaaridhiira.m
Abhibhuyya sabbaani parissayaani
Careyya ten-attamano satiimaa. 


No ce labhetha nipaka.m sahaaya.m
Saddhi.m cara.m saadhuvihaaridhiira.m
Raajaa-va ra.t.tha.m vijita.m pahaaya
Eko care maata'ng-ara~n~ne-va naago. 


Ekassa carita.m seyyo
Natthi baale sahaayataa
Eko care na ca paapaani kayiraa
Appossukko maata'ng-ara~n~ne-va naago. 

Nếu có bạn trí hiền
Hạnh lành, niệm tỉnh thức 
Hãy sống chung an lạc
Vượt thắng mọi hiểm nguy


Không có bạn hiền trí
Hạnh lành, đáng sống chung
Hãy sống riêng một mình
Như vua bỏ nước bại
Như voi chốn rừng sâu


Tốt hơn sống độc hành
Hơn chung bước bạn xấu
Một mình không ác hạnh
Sống tự tại thong dong
Như voi giữa rừng già 

If you gain a mature companion —
a fellow traveler, right-living, enlightened —
overcoming all dangers
	go with him, gratified,
	mindful.


If you don't gain a mature companion —
a fellow traveler, right-living, enlightened —
	go alone
like a king renouncing his kingdom,
like the elephant in the Matanga wilds,
	his herd.


Going alone is better,
there's no companionship with a fool.
	Go alone,
doing no evil, at peace,
like the elephant in the Matanga wilds.

Atthamhi jaatamhi sukhaa sahaayaa
Tu.t.thi sukhaa yaa itariitarena
Pu~n~na.m sukha.m jiivitasa'nkhayamhi
Sabbassa dukkhassa sukha.m pahaa.na.m. 



Sukhaa matteyyataa loke atho petteyyataa sukhaa
Sukhaa saama~n~nataa loke atho brahma~n~nataa sukhaa


Sukha.m yaava jaraa siila.m sukhaa saddhaa pati.t.thitaa
Sukho pa~n~naaya pa.tilaabho paapaana.m akara.na.m sukha.m. 

Vui thay, bạn lúc cần
Vui thay, sống tri túc
Vui thay, chết có đức
Vui thay, dứt mọi khổ

Vui thay, hiếu với mẹ
Vui thay, hiếu với cha
Vui thay, kính sa môn
Vui thay, kính Hiền Thánh

Vui thay, già có giới
Vui thay, tín vững chắc
Vui thay, có trí tuệ
Vui thay, không làm ác

A blessing: friends when the need arises.
A blessing: contentment with whatever there is.
Merit at the ending of life is a blessing.
A blessing:the abandoning of all suffering
	     & stress.

A blessing in the world:reverence to your mother.
A blessing:reverence to your father as well.
A blessing in the world:reverence to a contemplative.
A blessing:reverence for a brahman, too.

A blessing into old age is virtue.
A blessing: conviction established.
A blessing: discernment attained.
The non-doing of evil things is
	   a blessing.
