I have heard that on one occasion the Blessed One was staying near Vesali, in the Great Forest, at the Gabled Pavilion. Then, in the late afternoon, he left his seclusion and went to the sick ward, where he saw a monk who was weak & sickly. Seeing him, he sat down on a prepared seat. As he was sitting there, he addressed the monks:

Một thời, Thế Tôn trú ở Vesàlì, tạo Đại Lâm, giảng đường có nóc nhọn. Rồi Thế Tôn vào buổi chiều, từ Thiền tịnh đứng dậy, đi đến hành lang người bệnh. Thế Tôn thấy một Tỷ-kheo ốm yếu bệnh hoạn, thấy vậy Thế Tôn ngồi xuống trên chỗ đã soạn sẵn. Sau khi ngồi, Thế Tôn bảo các Tỷ-kheo:

When these five things don't leave a monk who is weak & sickly, it can be expected of him that, before long — with the ending of the fermentations — he will enter & remain in the fermentation-free awareness-release & discernment-release, having realized & directly known them for himself in the here & now. Which five?

Này các Tỷ-kheo, nếu năm pháp này không rời bỏ một kẻ ốm yếu bệnh hoạn, thời người ấy được chờ đợi như sau: Không bao lâu, do đoạn diệt các lậu hoặc, ngay trong hiện tại, với thắng trí sẽ chứng ngộ, chứng đạt và an trú vô lậu tâm giải thoát, tuệ giải thoát. Thế nào là năm?

There is the case where a monk

Ở đây, này các Tỷ-kheo, vị Tỷ-kheo

[1] remains focused on unattractiveness with regard to the body.

[1] Sống quán bất tịnh trên thân

[2] is percipient of foulness with regard to food.

[2] với tưởng ghê gớm đối với các món ăn

[3] is percipient of distaste with regard to every world.

[3] với tưởng không thích thú đối với tất cả thế giới.

[4] is percipient of the undesirability of all fabrications.

[4] quán vô thường trong tất cả hành.

[5] has the perception of death well established within himself.

[5] nội tâm khéo an trú trong tưởng về chết.
