Offers some suggestions on how to get started with Pali. Includes "Coping with Pali diacritical marks" and lists of Pali textbooks and reference books.
- Pali fonts
For an extensive review of available Pali and Sanskrit fonts, see » Transliteration and Devanagari Fonts for Sanskrit, by Ulrich Stiehl. The Association for Insight Meditation's » Pali Font Resources page offers several ANSI and Unicode fonts suitable for working with Pali.
Here are some fonts I can personally recommend:
- The » URW Palladio Pali font was custom designed to meet the Buddhist Publication Society's publishing requirements. It is an excellent font, although it works only with Unicode-compliant applications. Check the fine print of your word processing program to see if it supports Unicode.
- K.R. Norman's MyTymes and Normyn for † Macintosh or † Windows (Internet connection required).
- Pierre Robillard's DPalatino diacritic font (for Macintosh) is excellent, and has been used for many years by Wisdom Publications in such books as The Long Discourses of The Buddha, The Middle Length Discourses of the Buddha, and The Connected Discourses of the Buddha. They are available on the web from » Columbia University.
- Pali Verb Conjugation and Noun/Pronoun Declension Tables [Bhikkhu Nyanatusita]
This remarkable collection of tables condenses a huge amount of grammatical information into just a few pages. A very useful reference for Pali students of all levels.
