I have heard that on one occasion the Blessed One was staying near Rajagaha in the Cool Grove.

Một thời Thế T�n ở R�jagaha (Vương X�), tại rừng Siita.

Now at that time Anathapindika the householder had arrived in Rajagaha on some business.

L�c bấy giờ cư sĩ An�thapindika (Cấp C� Độc) đ� đến R�jagaha để l�m một v�i c�ng việc.

He heard, "An Awakened One, they say, has appeared in the world," and he wanted to go right then to see the Blessed One.

Cư sĩ An�thapindika được nghe đức Phật đ� ra đời v� muốn đến yết kiến Thế T�n.

Then the thought occurred to him, "Today is not the proper time to go to see the Blessed One. Tomorrow I will go to see the Blessed One at the proper time." With his mindfulness immersed in the Awakened One he lay down to sleep. Three times he got up during the night, thinking it was light.

Rồi cư sĩ An�thapindika suy nghĩ: "Nay kh�ng phải thời để yết kiến Thế T�n. Ng�y mai mới phải thời ta đến yết kiến Thế T�n". Như vậy với � nghĩ đi yết kiến đức Phật, �ng An�thapindika nằm ngủ. Trong đ�m, �ng ấy thức dậy ba lần, tưởng rằng trời đ� s�ng.

Then he went to the gate to the charnel ground. Non-human beings opened the gate.

Rồi cư sĩ An�thapindika đi đến cửa Siivatthika (nghĩa địa), v� c� những phi nh�n mở cửa.

When Anathapindika the householder had left the city, the light vanished and darkness appeared. Fear, terror, & horripilation arose, and because of that he wanted to turn back.

V� khi �ng ra khỏi th�nh phố, �nh s�ng biến mất v� b�ng tối hiện ra. �ng sợ h�i, hoảng hốt, l�ng t�c dựng ngược v� muốn đi trở về.

Then Sivaka the yakkha-spirit, invisible, proclaimed:

Rồi Dạ-xoa Siivaka ẩn h�nh, l�n tiếng như sau:

A hundred elephants,
a hundred horses,
a hundred mule-drawn carts,
a hundred-thousand maidens
adorned with jewels & earrings
aren't worth one-sixteenth
of one step forward.
Go forward, householder!
Go forward, householder!
Going forward is better for you,
not back!

Trăm voi v� trăm ngựa,
Trăm xe do ngựa k�o,
Cả trăm ng�n thiếu nữ,
Được trang sức b�ng tai,
Kh�ng bằng phần mười s�u,
Một bước đi tới n�y.
Cư sĩ, h�y tiến tới!
Cư sĩ, h�y tiến tới!
Tiến tới, tốt đẹp hơn,
Chớ c� lui, thối bước!

The darkness then vanished for Anathapindika and the light appeared. The fear, terror, & horripilation he had felt subsided.

Rồi với An�thapindika, tối tăm biến mất, �nh s�ng hiện ra. V� sợ h�i, hốt hoảng, l�ng t�c dựng ngược đ� khởi l�n được dịu hẳn xuống.

For a second time The darkness then vanished for Anathapindika and the light appeared. The fear, terror, & horripilation he had felt subsided.

Lần thứ hai, rồi với An�thapindika, tối tăm biến mất, �nh s�ng hiện ra. V� sợ h�i, hốt hoảng, l�ng t�c dựng ngược đ� khởi l�n được dịu hẳn xuống

A third time, the light vanished and darkness appeared. Fear, terror, & horripilation arose, and because of that Anathapindika wanted to turn back. Then for a third time, Sivaka the yakkha-spirit, invisible, proclaimed:

Lần thứ ba, với An�thapindika, �nh s�ng biến mất, b�ng tối hiện ra. V� sợ h�i, hoảng hốt, l�ng t�c dựng ngược khởi l�n. V� An�thapindika muốn trở lui. Lần thứ ba, Dạ-xoa Siivaka ẩn h�nh l�n tiếng như sau :

A hundred elephants,

The darkness then vanished for Anathapindika and the light appeared. The fear, terror, & horripilation he had felt subsided.

Rồi với An�thapindika, b�ng tối biến mất, �nh s�ng hiện ra v� sợ h�i, hoảng hốt, l�ng t�c dựng ngược đ� khởi l�n được dịu bớt.

So Anathapindika went to the Cool Grove.

Rồi An�thapindika đi đến rừng Siita, đi đến Thế T�n.

Now at that time, the Blessed One — having gotten up as the night was ending — was pacing back & forth in the open air

L�c bấy giờ Thế T�n thức dậy v�o l�c đ�m vừa m�n v� đang đi kinh h�nh ngo�i trời.

He saw Anathapindika the householder coming from afar. On seeing him, he got down from his meditation path and sat on a seat made ready. As he was sitting there he said to Anathapindika:

Thế T�n thấy An�thapindika từ xa đi đến, khi thấy vậy, từ chỗ kinh h�nh đi xuống, v� ngồi tr�n chỗ đ� soạn sẵn. Sau khi ngồi, Thế T�n n�i với cư sĩ An�thapindika:

-"Come, Sudatta."

-"H�y đến đ�y, Sudatta!"

Then Anathapindika, [thinking,] "The Blessed One is calling me by my given name!" threw himself down right there at the Blessed One's feet and said to him:

Rồi cư sĩ An�thapindika nghĩ: "Thế T�n k�u t�n ta", rồi c�i đầu đảnh lễ ch�n Thế T�n v� bạch Thế T�n:

-"Lord, I hope the Blessed One has slept in ease."

-"Bạch Thế T�n, Thế T�n ngủ c� an lạc chăng?"

The Buddha:]
Always, always,
he sleeps in ease:
the brahman totally unbound,
who doesn't adhere
to sensual pleasures,
who's without acquisitions
& cooled.
Having cut all ties
& subdued fear in the heart,
calmed,
he sleeps in ease,
having reached peace
of awareness.

(Thế T�n):
B�-la-m�n tịch tịnh,
Lu�n lu�n sống an lạc,
Kh�ng đ�o bồng dục vọng,
Thanh lương, kh�ng sanh y,
Mọi �i trước đoạn diệt,
T�m khổ n�o điều phục,
Tịch tịnh, sống an lạc,
T�m tư đạt h�a b�nh.
